Hi, it's Mary from The Internet. Specifically, here. This is where I post strange, interesting, and funny things I find on the internet, photos of what I had for dinner, links to things I wrote, etc. You can ask me shit here.
Here’s some Black Flag for you, because I was just over at Gallery Connexion where I was dropping off a piece of artwork a friend is donating to a fundraiser the Gallery is having this Saturday. Come to that, by the way. I know you don’t give a shit about ART or whatever, but it’s important that Fredericton have at least one place for music to happen that’s not a for-profit business, and as such we sometimes need help to keep the doors open.
Annnnyway, so I was over there and there were a bunch of white passenger vans with Ontario plates in the parking lot and I thought, “Oh right, that’s tonight.” There is a group of young, enthusiastic, and straight edge hardcore kids who rent the space from us sometimes so they can put on shows. Mostly for touring bands, but there are a few up-and coming local bands, too. I’ve never been to one of these because, frankly, the music sounds like garbage in my ears and I have other things I’d rather do with my weeknights. Like making casseroles and fawning over “comedy” podcasts where people discuss their various pathologies and compulsions at great length.
Annnnnyway, even though this scene doesn’t interest me at all, I’m so, so glad it exists. I’m being sincere when I say it gives me hope for the world that there are still people who are willing to drive from town to town in the middle of a Canadian winter to spread the Good News about punk rock (or some version of it.) There will probably be 200 kids at that show and good for all of them.
